AICP CTP recognition is awarded to certified professional planners who have achieved an exceptional level of expertise in the art and science of advanced transportation planning, including: analysis of complex transportation planning problems; creation of feasible solutions; coordination across constituencies and disciplines; and recommendations that efficiently integrate transport systems into the full set of systems necessary for healthy and sustainable communities.

Currently, no other certification program is offered that specifically addresses the work performed by transportation planners. Transportation planning is the discipline that examines and evaluates the potential of future actions to improve movement of people and goods by motor vehicle, public transportation, walking and cycling in accordance with a set of objectives. Certification as a Pupil Transportation Specialist is available for those individuals who qualify as paraprofessionals in the pupil transportation industry. To qualify for this certification, applicants must demonstrate the ability to carry out responsibilities at the middle management level and have at least three years experience in a pupil transportation position with responsibility commensurate with the category of certification.
