High Skill, High Wage, and High Demand Occupations (Ohio)

The federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 includes several references to High Skill, High Wage, or High Demand occupations.

The Bureau of Labor Market Information of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and EDEPS staff developed definitions for "high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand" occupations as follows:

  • High Skill Criteria: Occupations that generally require long-term, on-the-job training (OJT) of more than 12 months, or combined work experience and formal classroom instruction of more than 12 months; OR occupations for which employers prefer apprenticeship, or internship/residency, or 5 years or more of work experience in a related occupation; OR occupations for which employers prefer a postsecondary education degree/award of a certificate of greater than 1 year but less than 2 years, an Associate's Degree, a Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS), a Master's Degree, Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.), or first professional degree.

  • High Wage Criteria: Occupations with annual earnings of >= $26,083, or hourly earnings of >= $12.54 per hour.

  • High Demand Criteria: Occupations with annual, statewide job growth >= 104 new job openings annually, or occupations with annual, total job openings (both growth and replacements) >= 264 total job openings annually.

  • A limited number of occupations are included on the list based on anecdotal information.

The table below indicates which occupations meet the Ohio High Skill, High Wage, and High Demand criteria.
