Certification Description
There are three steps to achieve Emergency Medicine certification: 1) applying and credentialing, 2) taking and passing a qualifying examination, and 3) taking and passing an oral certification examination. Physicians who successfully complete each of these steps are certified as diplomates of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Certification is for a period of ten years. To maintain certification beyond the expiration date of the certificate, diplomates must participate in the ABEM Maintenance of Certification (ABEM MOC) program. The certification process begins with successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education - (ACGME) or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada - (RCPSC) accredited residency program in Emergency Medicine. ABEM also recognizes specific combined training programs that have been approved in advance by the respective sponsoring boards. A current list of combined Emergency Medicine training programs is available on the ACGME website www.acgme.org/adspublic. Residency graduates apply to ABEM for certification. Once ABEM verifies their credentials and accepts their applications, they automatically receive an assignment to the qualifying examination.

Medical Biochemical Genetics encompasses the evaluation, prevention, treatment, and discovery of diseases due to genetic defects in human biochemical processes. This area of genetics is recognized as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Residency training programs in this subspecialty, accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), are one year in duration and available only to licensed physicians who are board certified by the ABMG as clinical geneticists. This subspecialty is also available as a two-year training program for licensed physicians certified by other appropriate ABMS member boards. Training in medical biochemical genetics focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with metabolic disorders. Training does not include those skills and knowledge necessary to direct a clinical laboratory. A medical biochemical geneticist deals with the evaluation and treatment of patients with biochemical genetic disorders, defined as inborn errors of metabolism at any age of onset.

Medical toxicologists are physicians who specialize in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and monitoring of injury and illness from exposures to drugs and chemicals, as well as biological and radiological agents. Medical toxicologists care for people in clinical, academic, governmental, and public health settings, and provide poison control center leadership. Important areas of medical toxicology include acute drug poisoning; adverse drug events; drug abuse, addiction, and withdrawal; chemicals and hazardous materials; terrorism preparedness; venomous bites and stings; and environmental and workplace exposures. The American Board of Medical Toxicology (ABMT) was established in 1974 by the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology in recognition of the growing responsibilities placed on physicians who provide a dedicated portion of their professional activities to Medical Toxicology. In 1990, ABMT diplomates voted to investigate recognition within the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) with focus on the issuance of a subspecialty certificate by interested ABMS member boards.

An otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon is a physician who has been prepared by an accredited residency program to provide comprehensive medical and surgical care of patients with diseases and disorders that affect the ears, the respiratory and upper alimentary systems and related structures of the head and neck.
